WHAT AGE DO I HAVE TO BE:
Both parties must be 18 years of age or older. If a person under 17 wishes to marry, they must have a parent or legal custodian present with the applicant and provide their consent and proof of age. Some counties require additional steps be taken for underage marriages, please contact the County Auditor.

WHAT INFORMATION SHOULD I TAKE:
Before going to the Auditor or Recorder's Office, please gather the following information for both the bride and groom:

Social Security Number/Card
Date of Birth and Place of Birth
Mother's Maiden Name and State of Mother's Birth
Father's Name and State of Father's Birth
Your full legal address

WHO CAN BE MY WITNESSES:
Your witnesses should be at least 18 years of age. Although some counties permit persons under the age of 18 to be a witness, the persons you use as witnesses should understand they are witnessing a civil contract.

MUST I LIVE IN THE STATE:
No, there are no residency requirements to obtain a Washington state marriage license. However, the marriage ceremony must take place in the state.

HOW LONG BEFORE I CAN GET MARRIED:
The 3-day waiting period imposed by the state cannot be waived. Your license must be used within 63 days of the date you obtain it or 60 days after the waiting period, or it becomes invalid and you must reapply. Your marriage license is valid anywhere in the state of Washington.

DO I REALLY NEED A CEREMONY:
No, the only mandatory purpose of the wedding ceremony is for the bride and groom to each declare, in front of two witnesses and their officiant, that they intend to be married. You may simply ask your officiant to perform an elopement-type wedding where he or she only asks if you take each other to be lawfully married.
